CaREER
With funding support from the National Cancer Institute
About the CaREER program
Premier program for training in transformative areas of Radiation Oncology and reducing disparities
The overall goal of the CaREER (Cancer Research Education Excellence in Radiotherapy) program is to train a highly diverse next generation of scientists, technologists and physicians who will be empowered to pursue careers involving research in emerging and transformative areas of radiotherapy. These transformative areas of research have major potential to address radiotherapy limitations in substantial ways, support global health in radiation oncology, extend radiotherapy to curative treatment of both local and metastatic disease, and reduce disparities with innovations to reduce treatment time and cost, enhance patient convenience, and significantly increase survival and quality of life for cancer patients.
Program Activities
1
Summer Co-op
12 weeks hands-on research experience through a co-op mentored by world-class cancer researchers and clinicians at Johns Hopkins and collaborators. The co-op will develop the trainee’s research skills, expand critical thinking abilities, develop practical team participation and collaboration skills, and facilitate the trainee’s ability to conduct independent research and to publish or present their work at CaREER workshops and other conferences
2
Year-round CaREER program seminars/webinars
Seminars will cover focused TRANSFORM RT research areas, responsible conduct of research, research design, leadership, and cross-cultural communication. Meanwhile, yearly CaREER workshops at Global Health Catalyst summits will focus on knowledge/experience sharing, research posters and oral presentations by trainees, and networking involving participants from different cultural backgrounds.
3
C4 collaboration platform
The C4 will will provide an innovative virtual platform for collaboration and career development support with 4 CORE (Care, Outreach, Research, and Education) apps. The Care app will incorporate opportunities for career development in radiation oncology care that include TRANSFORM Radiotherapy areas

Trainees
The very best
Trainees for the program are recruited from USA Institutions via online application. Trainees are also recruited during CaREER workshops and a wide Global Health Catalyst (GHC) summit network established over the years. The GHC summits, are organized yearly to catalyze collaborations to address disparities in the USA and globally. Trainees will receive a monthly stipend during the hands on summer training session and additional support throughout the training program. Global health trainees may receive up to $5000 additional support for travel.
Mentors
The very best mentors
The CaREER Mentor team has a broad portfolio of research projects.
Some of the exciting emerging
transformative areas of research include: Radio-Immunotherapy, FLASH radiotherapy (RT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Epigenetics, Radiomics, nanoparticles and smart biomaterials, MRI-guided RT, and new approaches for addressing disparities in the USA
and in global health. Global Health trainees will have co-mentors in partner international sites to facilitate and enhance their experience, resulting in joint conference abstracts and/or publications.
Research
Cutting-edge research
The program will
-
provide a mentored 12 weeks hands-on research experience mentored by world-class cancer researchers and clinicians at Johns Hopkins and collaborators in the USA and globally
-
Establish year-round complementary CaREER program seminars and workshops including at the Global Health Catalyst summits
-
Exciting Research areas include: Global Health, Radio-Immunotherapy, ultra-high dose rate FLASH Radiotherapy, Artificial Intelligence (AI), smart biomaterials, MRI-guided radiotherapy, epigenetics, radiomics, Telehealth etc
Impact
Driving innovation and impact
Achieving the CaREER program aims will have significant impact in several ways:
It will showcase the exciting developments in radiotherapy and opportunities for research in this field, including for high impact cross-disciplinary collaborations and for addressing disparities in the USA and globally
It will provide hands on training and continued interactions in the area of radiotherapy via the C4 platform for the CaREER program that creates an intellectual environment for sustaining engagement and facilitating tracking of graduates of the CaREER program in their career progression.
It will provide a platform to encourage bright young scientists to enter the field of cancer research and view this as a career option.
The CaREER program will increase the diversity of the cancer research and practice work force through its emphasis on including a significant number of trainees from underrepresented minority communities .
